Rep. Sen. Mitt Romney Calls Trump’s Coronavirus Response a “Tragedy”’
On Thursday, Republican Sen. Mitt Romney called President Donald Trump’s coronavirus response “a great human tragedy.”
During an interview with the left-wing media outlet, CNN, the Republican criticized the President’s leadership during the pandemic. In the discussion, news anchor Wolf Blitzer told Romney that Wednesday marked the “single deadliest day”’ of the entire coronavirus pandemic. Blitzer then noted that over 2,800 Americans died while more than 100,000 people were hospitalized as a result of coronavirus infection. The show’s host went on to say that the situation had become worse, that the CDC director, Robert R. Redfield, warned the public that the next three months might be the “most difficult time in the public health history of this nation.”
Blitzer then asked the Senator to comment on the President’s leadership and whether Trump had other priorities that he is more “obsessed” with. Romney responded, “Well, this hasn’t been the focus of his rhetoric, apparently. And I think it’s a great human tragedy, without question.” The Republican Senator also claimed that the thousands of lives lost were “heartbreaking.”
The Senator then claimed that the lives lost were “unnecessary” and that it could have been easily prevented. Romney went on to blame individuals who have “relaxed”’ their standards in following health guidelines. The Senator also went on to blame the administration as they lacked a “consistent plan” for Americans to follow, which includes wearing masks and observing social distancing.
Romney also lamented how the coronavirus pandemic had become a “political issue.” The Senator then blasted that it should not have been since it is a public health crisis. Unfortunately, Romney claimed that the administration failed to warn Americans on its possible implications and that people continued to die from it.
Finally, the Senator believed that unless the administration is able to take the matter more seriously, instead of treating it as a political issue, then the American people would continue to suffer and die from the virus. “It’s unacceptable,” Romney concluded.
Romney is not the only one who is turning against the President. In fact, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director, Dr. Anthony Fauci, whom PEOPLE magazine had named “People of the Year,” also criticized the President’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
Fauci, who is also serving as a senior member of the White House coronavirus task force, went behind the President’s back after he suggested that former Vice-President Joe Biden will take the pandemic ”more seriously.” While both Fauci and Romney continued to blast the President, Trump’s operation Warp Speed had allowed two pharmaceutical companies, Pfizer and Moderna, to develop a vaccine at breakneck speed.
