On Monday, President Donald Trump abruptly leaves his press conference after a Secret Service agent informed him there was a shooting outside the White House.

The president left the podium, and the briefing doors were locked after he exited.

After a few minutes, the president returned to the podium to tell the reporters that there was a shooting outside the White House. “There was an actual shooting, someone has been taken to the hospital. It seems like the person was shot by the Secret Service,” Trump said and confirmed that the suspect was armed. He then proceeded to thank the Secret Service for their quick response to the situation. “I feel very safe with the Secret Service…they are the best of the best,” Trump said.

Later on Monday afternoon, the Secret Service provided further details of the shooting. A 51-year-old male allegedly approached a Uniformed Division officer who was at his post at the corner of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House. The man reportedly told the uniformed agent that he had a weapon, sprinted, and then “withdrew an object from his clothing.”

A CSPAN employee posted a video capturing the audio of the shots.

The Secret Service posted an update and said that both the suspect and officer were taken to the hospital.

After returning to the podium, a reporter asked Trump if he was rattled by the situation to which Trump responded, “I don’t know, do I seem rattled?”

Then another one asked him why he decided to return and continue the press conference, Trump said, “Well, I didn’t even think about not coming back.”
