In a press conference on Tuesday, President Donald Trump extended his prayers and sympathies to the victims of a tragic explosion in Beirut, Lebanon. The President also expressed his concern over what appears to be a “terrible attack.”

Trump told the media that he had met with his generals, who suggested that the two deadly explosions “look like a terrible attack.” The President continued, “This was not some kind of manufacturing explosion type of event,” noting that his generals “seem to think it was an attack. It was a bomb of some kind, yes.”

The President also offered his deep sympathies to those who had lost their loved ones during the explosion.

According to Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Hassan Diab, he suggested that the two fatal explosions might have been a part of a tragic accident. Diab confirmed that roughly 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate were stored in the area, which was confiscated six years ago. Moreover, the Prime Minister vowed that he would not rest until he found the person responsible for the tragic explosion, adding that he would “impose the most severe penalties.”

Another Lebanese official, Abbas Ibrahim, chief of the country’s General Security, also indicated that the explosion might have been caused by the highly explosive materials that were stored at the port after it was confiscated from a ship.

In a report from the New York Times, the media outlet claimed that two explosions had taken place in the city’s capital. The first one allegedly came from a fireworks warehouse, which was followed by a second larger mushroom cloud explosion. Based on the footage which was uploaded on social media, the last explosion left an “orange-tinged” smoke.

Its aftermath was equally devastating. After the cloud of smoke disappeared, it revealed a city that was covered in ash and glass. The explosion was so massive that buildings as far as two kilometers partially collapsed. According to Zein Ja’far, an editor for Sky News, who had witnessed the said incident, ambulances, fire brigade, police patrols, and even military personnel were immediately dispatched to provide emergency services.

Even for a city that had sustained terrorist attacks and bombings, residents described the scene as a “real horror show.” The devastating site pushed Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud into tears as he described it as a “devastated city.”

What’s worse is that Lebanon’s food security might also be at stake. Unfortunately, an important grain silo that housed 85 percent of the country’s grain was destroyed. In a statement from their state-run National News Agency, all the grains which were stored in the facility were already contaminated and cannot be used.

Even hospitals endured severe damages from the blast. In fact, the massive blast was enough to knock out the electricity and cause major damages at the St. George University Hospital. As a result, dozens of injured victims had to be rushed and treated outside in stretchers and wheelchairs.

Based on the recent information from the country’s health ministry, at least 70 people have died as a result of the tragic explosion, while 3,000 were injured.
