On May 31, 2020, Chicago had its single bloodiest day in 60 years as violent riots broke out in the city over the death of 46-year-old, African American man, George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis Police.

In a report from the Chicago Crime Lab, which was published on Monday, Chicago saw 18 murders within a 24-hour period, marking it as the most violent day in the state’s history since 1961. During that same weekend, over 85 people were wounded, and 132 Chicago Police officers were injured.

In an interview for the Chicago Sun-Times, senior research director at the crime lab, Max Kapustin said, “We’ve never seen anything like it, at all.” He continued, “I don’t even know how to put it into context. It’s beyond anything that we’ve ever seen before.”

Police spokesman Thomas Ahern also told the media outlet that the level of criminal activity is unprecedented. Ahern also assured the public that the police department is doing everything it can to investigate the multiple murders across the city, as well as determining the true motive for such deaths. Ahern said, “The department is actively working to seek justice for all the residents impacted, especially those who have been killed or injured by these senseless acts of violence.”

The next highest death rate in the city goes back to August 4, 1991, as 13 people were killed within a single day. According to Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot, the city has received a whopping 65,000 911 calls on May 31. That’s an additional 50,000 distress calls from regular days.

Moreover, during that fateful weekend starting from Friday, May 29, at 7 p.m to Sunday, May 31, the number of deaths shot up to 25. Some of those who were killed from the violent exchange was a 36-year-old father, two teenage girls, a college freshman, as well as other innocent civilians who were caught up in the violent protests.

The number has become extremely high, considering that Chicago also had its own issues with crime. In fact, in 2016, Chicago was dubbed as the most dangerous city in America, with a total of 653 murders. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the number was higher than in New York City and Los Angeles combined. Until now, the number of crimes continued to go up. In 2020 alone, 238 locals have been murdered, and 1,308 were shot.

However, the numbers went down due to the state’s strictly stay-at-home orders. The recent shutdown measures were put in place to stop the spread of the deadly coronavirus. According to the Chicago Tribune, the implementation of the lockdown order saw a 20% drop in all major crimes within a single week.

Despite the lack of peace and order in the city, Lightfoot scoffed at President Donald Trump’s warning to send the national guard if the situation continued to go worse. As the city was devastated by extreme violence with rioters targeting police officers and innocent civilians, looting stores, and burning buildings, the Democratic Mayor simply dismissed Trump. “That’s not gonna happen,” Lightfoot said, as she declared that Trump only wanted to “bluster.” She also refused to accept any military intervention, in fears that Trump might be able to use the peace and order situation as an advantage in his upcoming 2020 general elections.
