On Tuesday, President Donald Trump publicly honored retired St. Louis City police captain David Dorn after he was killed by looters outside a store.

In a report from the KMOV reported that at around 2:30 a.m., police officers found the body of 77-year-old Dorn outside a Lee’s Pawn Jewelry store in the 4100 blocks of Martin Luther King Dr.

In a social media post, Trump paid his respects to the retired police officer. “Our highest respect to the family of David Dorn, a Great Police Captain from St. Louis, who was viciously shot and killed by despicable looters last night.” Trump also extended his gratitude to the retired police officer “We honor our police officers, perhaps more than ever before. Thank you!” The U.S. President also added a photo of Dorn.

KMOV cited that Dorn’s wife, Ann, continued to serve as an active member of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

Even the left-wing Ethical Society of Police (ESOP) also shared their sympathy for the former police officer. In a statement, the ESOP responded that one of the people who were killed in a St. Louis riot was a retired City Captain. The organization also condemned the looters behind the police officer’s death. “He was the type of brother that would’ve given his life to save them if he had to. Violence is not the answer, whether it’s a citizen or officer,” the post read.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch also commemorated Dorn’s years in service. The media outlet reported that he had retired from the St. Louis Police Department in 2007, after a 38-year career. During his time in service, Dorn was able to go up the ranks from being a rookie patrol officer in 1969, to become the city’s police captain.

Moreover, he had worked as a deputy commander for the Bureau of Patrol Support, which is responsible for handling traffic, mounted patrols, commercial vehicles, and even tactical units. After his retirement, Dorn served as the police chief in Moline Acres.

A viral video of Dron’s death resurfaced. In the said footage, a man explained that the retired police officer was defending a pawnshop as looters tried to get hold of “some TV’s.” Dorn was found lying on the sidewalk after being fatally shot.

Violence had erupted in the city as four other police officers were shot during an intense riot. Fortunately, the officers had sustained non-life threatening injuries. Across the country, cities saw a nationwide protest over the death of George Floyd, who had died after a police officer knelt on his neck. Just this week, the police officer behind Floyd’s death had already been arrested.

As the violence continued to grow, the President expressed his growing frustration and criticisms for allowing the riots to take place in their states. In a private video conference, which lasted for an hour, Trump claimed that the U.S. governors were “weak” and warned that they would only look like “fools” if they are unable to contain the situation.

He also urged state officials to take control of the situation and to dominate the streets if necessary.
