More Texans will vote for Trump than for Joe Biden if the presidential election is held now according to a poll conducted by the University of Texas and the Texas Tribune. The results were announced on Saturday, but the poll itself was held back on April 10-19, 2020. More than 1,000 registered voters in Texas were asked the question, “How would you vote in a presidential election today?”

The results showed that 49% of the respondents would vote for President Trump while 44% said they would go for the presumptive Democratic nominee. The remaining 7% of the respondents said that they are still undecided. The survey has a +/- 2.83 percent margin of error, which means that the President has a statistical lead over his rival.

The co-director of the survey, Daron Shaw said that the President does better in a poll when he faces an actual opponent and not just the “Democratic nominee.” Now that Biden is the presumptive nominee, it is clear that the majority of Texans still favor the President. However, his lead is not that decisive, compared to his performance in the last election where he beat Hillary Clinton by nine percent during the voting. Hillary was a highly disliked candidate and the large lead was to be expected.

Right now, the election is going to be a referendum on the administration’s response to the coronavirus. Although the survey has not factored the new developments regarding the sexual assault allegations against Joe Biden, which is gaining credibility and could hurt the leading Democratic nominee’s chances.

Texas has been traditionally Republican, but the Democrats are hoping that they can turn it blue in time for the next election. They might have to get a different candidate other than Joe Biden to do it because the old senator is proving to be a really problematic candidate. On top of the sexual assault allegations, there are also concerns that he is in cognitive decline.
