Today it was reported that since the beginning of March, China has sold almost four billion respiratory protective masks to foreign countries. As officials attempt to alleviate global fear over the quality of the medical supplies being exported from China, the coronavirus that originated within its borders continues to ravage the globe.

With China’s reported cases supposedly decreasing, the communist leadership has urged medical supply manufacturers to ramp up production as the rest of the world faces an extreme shortage of personal protective equipment. As the global death toll soars north of 60,000, the Chinese are cashing in.

Since March 1, China has exported over 3.86 billion masks, 37.5 million pieces of protective clothing, over 16,000 ventilator machines, and almost 3 million test kits for COVID-19. These statistics were provided by China’s custom official Jin Hai, who also stated that the orders had been sent to over 50 different countries.

Ms. Hai put a valuation on these exports of 10.2 billion yuan or $1.4 billion.

The problem is way more than the revenue they are producing off of this pandemic. Spain, Croatia, the Philippines, Turkey, and the Netherlands have all reported substandard and faulty medical supplies and products coming to them from China.

To put it into perspective, the Dutch government was forced to recall 600,000 faulty masks from China. Out of the original order of 1.3 million masks, a mind-boggling 46.2% were reported not to meet quality standards. China’s defense of providing a country with 600,000 pieces of life threatening PPE was simply “manufacturer stated clearly that (the masks) are non-surgical.”

If 600,000 pieces of dangerous PPE doesn’t merit concern, then how about the nightmare Spain had to deal with? Last week Spain was forced to reject thousands of COVID-19 test kits sent from an unauthorized Chinese company. Spain wasn’t forced to reject them because the company was unauthorized; they had to reject them because Spanish physicians labeled the test kits as “extremely unreliable.” Once again, China had a response that should raise any country’s doubts in them, responding, “reports did not reflect the full facts.”

Jiang Fa, an official with the Chinese Minister of Commerce, released a statement addressing the concerns of the quality of supplies coming out of China: “In reality, there are various factors, such as China having different standards and different usage habits to other countries. Even improper use can lead to doubts over quality.”

Hua Chunying, the spokeswoman for Foreign Ministry, mirrored Fa’s statement over the past week by continuously recommending that the Western media stop politicizing and hyping up the issue of faulty medical equipment coming out of China.

Regardless of the two above statements, China is claiming that they are enforcing stricter regulations around the medical equipment it is manufacturing. Asserting that any medical product for export must meet China’s standards as well as the manufacturing standards of the country the product is heading to. If that’s the case, America should expect zero shipments coming from China anytime soon.

They will also be increasing the production of COVID-19 testing kits to be able to produce 4 million test kits a day. It’s great to hear that they are increasing production on a product that Spain labeled “extremely unreliable.”
