It was a breathtaking scene as President Donald Trump and first lady Melania strolled around the grounds of the Taj Mahal, holding hands and basking in the late afternoon sun.

It was a rare moment of affection, as the couple lovingly stared ahead of what is considered as “the iconic symbol of lasting love.” The first lady described the Taj Mahal as “lovely” and “beautiful” while the president echoed the same sentiment. “It’s truly incredible,” he said.

It was one of the few occasions in which the President went to a cultural attraction during a foreign visit. In fact, the couple went to the marble mausoleum just hours after Trump gave a speech to a 110,000 strong audience at a cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, India.

As the world’s biggest political party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), gave the president a warm welcome, “The world’s biggest democracy welcomes you, Mr. Trump. We may be in Gujarat, but entire India is excited to invite you. The arrival of POTUS, FLOTUS, Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner gives the Indo-US ties a familial touch and adds warmth to it: PM Modi #NamasteTrump.”

The event started with the song “Macho Man” being played out as prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump emerged on the stage. When the music stopped, both leaders held arms in the air. The minister went into the podium and described Trump as someone “who does not need an introduction.” Modi added that ‘”His name is familiar to every person on the planet. His every word is followed by tens of millions. He was a household name, and very popular even before he went on to occupy the highest office in this great country.”

In his speech, Trump declared, “America loves India, respects India. India gives hope to all of humanity,” and the crowd responded with a huge roar.

The support was indeed overwhelming. In fact, even before Trump could reach the stadium, they were already greeted by a huge crowd in Ahmedabad, with people waving American flags while the president’s motorcade passed. In the street, large billboards were spread out featuring Modi alongside Trump and Melania.

Trump had also acknowledged the warm welcome and promised Modi to reciprocate the act. “We’ll have 7 million people between the airport and the event,” he said. Earlier, Trump had also announced a $3 billion deal which will provide state-of-the-art military helicopters to the country.

However, just hours before Trump’s visit, Indian authorities were extremely distressed as clashes broke out in New Delhi over a citizenship law, which would grant Indian citizenship to neighboring countries, as long as they are not Muslims. The opposition claimed that the law was unconstitutional and promotes bigotry. Delhi’s Metro rail confirmed that the protest happened in two stations, Jaffrabad and Maujpur-Babarpur, which were just 10 miles away from Trump’s event. As Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: “Very distressing news regarding disturbance of peace and harmony in parts of Delhi coming in.” He even called out the home minister to “restore law and order” and ensure “peace and harmony is maintained.”
