Landmarks Turn Purple and Gold in Memory of Kobe Bryant
In honor of NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and the seven others who died in the helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, the Los Angeles City Hall was illuminated in purple and gold on Sunday at 8:24 pm.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti tweeted a photo of the city hall building.

“Kobe Bryant was a giant who inspired, amazed, and thrilled people everywhere with his incomparable skill on the court — and awed us with his intellect and humility as a father, husband, creative genius, and ambassador for the game he loved. He will live forever in the heart of Los Angeles, and will be remembered through the ages as one of our greatest heroes,” said Garcetti in a statement.
Bryant was scheduled to coach and 13-year-old Gianna was to supposed to play in a Sunday basketball game at his Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks, California. The helicopter was en route to the game.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva reported nine people were on the helicopter- a pilot and eight passengers.
Orange Coast baseball coach John Altobelli, his wife Keri, and their daughter Alyssa, were among the victims. Christina Mauser, a girls basketball coach, also died in the crash.
The fountains at the LA Music Center were programmed to shine gold and purple for the Los Angeles Lakers legend and five-time NBA champion. Santa Monica Pier and LAX also paid tribute to Bryant.

Many people took to social media to express their sorrow about the passing of the basketball legend including sports stars, celebrities, President Trump, First Lady Melania, and others.
“Reports are that basketball great Kobe Bryant and three others have been killed in a helicopter crash in California. That is terrible news!” tweeted President Trump.
Later the president tweeted, “Kobe Bryant, despite being one of the truly great basketball players of all time, was just getting started in life. He loved his family so much, and had such strong passion for the future. The loss of his beautiful daughter, Gianna, makes this moment even more devastating. Melania and I send our warmest condolences to Vanessa and the wonderful Bryant family. May God be with you all!”
