Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) gave her take on Trump’s defense after the impeachment trial adjourned on Saturday, saying the lawyers “shredded” the House impeachment managers’ case.

“Within two hours I thought that the White House Counsel and their team entirely shredded the case that has been presented by the house managers,” stated Sen. Ernst, judging the Trump’s legal team’s first day of defending the president against the charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

The president’s legal defense team— Pat Cipollone, Michael Purpura, Patrick Philbin, and Trump’s personal attorney Jay Sekulow— each attacked the House Democrat’s case, recounting it as personal stories filled with half truths put together in process that denied Trump of his legal rights to a fair process. Senators were reminded repeatedly by the attorneys that their vote in the impeachment trial has broad consequences.

White House Counsel Pat Cipollone told senators, “They are asking you not only to overturn the results of the last election. They’re asking you to tear up all of the ballots all across the country on your own initiative, take that decision away from the American people.”

Like the House Impeachment Managers, Trump’s team played video clips of witnesses from the House impeachment inquiry and of Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), and noted the prosecution concealed details and facts that did not fit the “predetermined outcome” and that they were “mind-reading” to deduce the motives of President Trump and Ukraine President Zelenskiy.

Jay Sekulow said, “They think you can read minds. I think you should look at the words,” as he pointed to the transcripts of the phone call between the president and Zelensky. Sekulow noted the favor Trump was asking of Zelensky was not for himself but for his country. Trump wanted to be sure that Zelensky was going to root out corruption so U.S. dollars were not misspent.

Sekulow also stated the aid was released to Ukraine six days after Ukraine assembled its anti-corruption court and a meeting between the two leaders took place Sept. 25 at the United Nations, followed by a news conference where Zelenskiy said “nobody pushed me.”

White House attorney Mike Purpura pointed out that whenever the Democrats say “President Trump made demands or issued a quid pro quo – they are saying the President Zelenskiy and his top advisers are being untruthful.”

White House attorney Patrick Philbin responded to the obstruction of Congress charge by citing legal precedents that the subpoenas were invalid without the whole House vote that an impeachment inquiry had been launched.

Two sets of hearings were held by House investigators and did not permit Trump’s counsel to be present for cross examination of the witnesses. Trump’s lawyers were invited to the House Judiciary Committee, but the White House declined because it didn’t allow them to question witnesses or have their own.

Philbin questioned the senators, “Why would you have a process like that. What does that tell you about the process? Cross-examination is the greatest legal engine ever invented for the discovery of truth.”

After hearing Trump’s legal team, CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin admitted “The Republicans are winning here. The President is winning here.”
