A Ukrainian passenger plane carrying 176 people crashed a few minutes after taking off from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport on Wednesday, killing everyone onboard. The Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737-800 en route to Kyiv slammed into a field near Shahedshahr outside of Tehran a few hours after Iran’s missile attacks on the Iraqi military basses.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko said the airplane was carrying 63 Canadians, 82 Iranians, 11 Ukrainian passengers and crew members, 10 Swedes, 4 Afghans, 3 Germans, and 3 Britons.

Officials from Pentagon said the passenger plan was shot down by mistake by an Iranian anti-aircraft missile.

Iran’s head of Civil Aviation Organization (CAOI) Ali Abedzadeh denied the plane was shot by a missile, stating, “Scientifically, it is impossible that a missile hit the Ukrainian plane, and such rumors are illogical.”

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated in a news conference on Thursday, “We have intelligence from multiple sources including our allies and our own intelligence. The evidence indicates that the plane was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile. This may well have been unintentional.”

An eyewitness named Din Mohammad Qassemi told The Associated Press, “I heard a massive explosion and all the houses started to shake. There was fire everywhere. At first, I thought (the US) have hit here with missiles and went in the basement for shelter. After a while, I went out and saw a plane has crashed over there. Body parts were lying around everywhere.”
