Jill Biden, the spouse of former Vice President Joe Biden, served food and handed out Christmas gifts to asylum seekers living in a refugee camp in Matamoros, Mexico, near Brownsville, Texas, on Sunday.

Accompanied by Rep. Filemon Vela (D-TX), the former second lady plodded through muddy fields filled with hundreds of tents in the Matamoros, Mexico, to spread holiday cheer to over 2,000 migrants seeking asylum. The migrants, known as MPPs, are required to stay in Mexico to wait for their U.S. immigration hearing as part of President Trump’s Migrant Protection Protocols.

According to Border Report, Jill Biden said, “It’s heartbreaking. It’s really heartbreaking. Across the river is the flag of the United States. The flag of the United States offers people hope. They’re bringing their families and their loved ones here for hope of a better future and a better life for themselves.”

After being there for more than two hours, Jill Biden said, “It’s not who we are as Americans. We are a welcoming nation, but that’s not the message that we’re sending at the border. We’re saying, ‘Stop. Don’t come in.’ And that’s not who we are.”

Jill Biden’s visit is the second presidential campaign to pay a visit to the camp this year. Former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro stopped at the camp last October while he was campaigning for the White House.

Jill Biden’s trip was meant to focus attention on the plight of the refugees, but it leaves some of us wondering why Joe Biden didn’t focus on immigration reform during the 8 years he served as Vice President.
