As the Democratic impeachment witch hunt rages on, new polls are painting a picture of a country that is losing its appetite for the highly-partisan proceedings. A new poll relapsed by CBS News and YouGov shows that support for the impeachment has dropped in just 42%, giving the President a clear majority of backers who do not want to see him impeached. A recent Quinnipiac University polls showed that 51% or registered voter do not want the President removed from office. These numbers contradict earlier polls which put the number of supporters over 50% and even as high as 60% in some places.

This current CBS News/YouGov poll, which surveyed more than 4,500 Americans, shows a much clearer picture of how the country feels. Previous polls that had the number of supporters much higher usually had asked far less people. Also in the poll, 22% of those asked said the Senate should not convict the President and 20% went even further saying, the Senate should not even hold the trial. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.7 per cent.

With the full House vote expected this week and the trial tentatively scheduled for January 2020, these numbers will be very interesting to watch as the proceeding move to the Senate. Impeachment started as a move that Democrats thought would rid them of a President they did not like but, as the 2020 general election cycle ramps up and the support continues to decline, it could turn into a major backfire by the desperate party.
