60 Minutes found over 300 political ads for President Trump were taken down, many over the summer for violations of the company’s policies. But the CBS reporters could not find a specific reason for the removal of the ads. This is common with social media companies — they are hesitant to give an explanation why they ban or censor ads.

In an interview, 60 minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl asked YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, “Have you taken down any of President Trump’s ads at all?”

Wojcicki replied, “There are ads of President Trump that were not approved to run on Google or YouTube.”  But when Stahl asked her for an example, Wojcicki responded, “Well, they’re available in our transparency report.”

Because of the concerns that were raised after the 2016 election, Google and YouTube keep an archive of political ads that have run on the website. However, the archive does not give details on what policies were violated. CBS reporters “found very little transparency in the transparency report.”

Stahl told Wojcicki, “As you know, conservatives think that you discriminate against them.”

Wojcicki replied, “Well, first of all there are lots of very successful conservative creators on YouTube. Our systems, our algorithms, they don’t have any concept of understanding what’s a Democrat, what’s a Republican. They don’t have any concept of political bias built into them in any way. And we do hear this criticism from all sides. We also have people who come from more liberal backgrounds who complain about discrimination. And so I think that no matter who you are, we are trying to enforce our policies in a consistent way for everybody.”
