Prominent Long Island Congressman Becomes 23rd Republican to Announce He Will Not Seek Reelection in 2020
Peter King, 75, a 14-term congressman from Long Island, NY had called an end to his 28 year congressional career announcing he will not seek a 15th term in 2020. On social media King told his constituents that after speaking with his family he has decided not to run again next year. He said his time in office has been “extremely fulfilling” and thanked the residents of the 2nd NY Congressional District
After talks w my family I will not seek re-election in 2020. Difficult decision as my 28 yrs in Congress have been extremely fulfilling while fighting for my constituents: 9/11 & Sandy funding/combating terrorism & MS-13. I thank residents of NY2 for allowing me to represent you.

The announcement made King the 23rd Republican member of the House of Representatives to announce that they would not seek reelection in the 2020 elections. Of those 23, 16 are stepping away from elected office completely, 4 are running for different offices, including 2 for the Senate and 1 for Governor. The remaining 3 are Tom Marino (R-PA), Sean Duffy (R-WI), and Chris Collins (R-NY) who have all already left their office for various reasons.
This has caused concern in some parts of the Republican party. Stoked by media reports, some believe these members of congress are stepping down in fear of a Democratic “Blue Wave” coming in the 2020 elections. However, others feel as though it is simply “old-school” Republicans who are making way for new, Trump-style Republicans.
