GOP Lawmakers Storm Closed Door Impeachment Hearings
On Wednesday morning, Rep. Matt Gaetz led the way for House Republicans as they stormed through the closed doors of the impeachment investigation of President Trump. The unexpected move caused House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff to immediately stop the proceedings.
Before they barged into the underground room where the proceedings were held, the Republican lawmakers held a press conference on “transparency” in the impeachment probe. Gaetz told reporters, “We’re going to try and go in there, and we’re going to try to figure out what’s going on, on behalf of the millions of Americans that we represent that want to see this Congress working for them and not obsess with attacking a president who we believe has not done anything to deserve impeachment.”
Watch:
House Minority Whip Steve Scalise asked, “What is Adam Schiff trying to hide? I think that’s the question so many people have, so many of my colleagues have, so many people in the press should have.”
“Voting members of Congress are being denied access from being able to see what’s happening behind these closed doors where they’re trying to impeach the president of the United States with a one-sided set of rules. They call the witnesses. They don’t let anybody else call the witnesses,” said Scalise.

Enough is enough! The American people deserve transparency! This Democrat scheme to impeach @realDonaldTrump behind closed doors cannot continue. pic.twitter.com/ernM1x73m9
After the press conference, the House Republicans went into the room where Laura Cooper, the Pentagon official who oversees Ukraine policy, was about to testify. The rush of Republicans caused a stand-off situation since there was no agreement for the non-committee members to be there. Committee Chairman Schiff did not ask for the Republicans to be arrested or removed, instead Schiff left the room.
The Republicans didn’t have any plans of leaving the room where the closed-door investigation was held, and ordered 17 pizzas to be delivered for lunch. Rep. Doug Lamborn also brought two large bags of food from Chick-fil-A.
Some members of the GOP took to social media to explain to the public what happened. Rep. Bradley Byrne tweeted, “Adam Schiff just SHUT DOWN his secret underground impeachment hearing after I led a group of Republicans into the room. Now he’s threatening me with an Ethics complaint! I’m on the Armed Services Cmte but being blocked from the Dept. Asst. SecDef’s testimony. This is a SHAM!”
