Just days after Hillary Clinton accused 2016 third-party candidate Jill Stein of being a “Russian asset” leveraged to take votes away from her, a longtime Republican donor is floating the idea of running as a third-party candidate in 2020.

The CEO of Dick’s Sporting Goods, Ed Stack, is investigating the viability of running for President independently in the next election. Politico reported that the 64-year-old billionaire has commissioned focus groups in Wisconsin to see what would happen in a 3-way race between President Trump, either Joe Biden or Elizabeth Warren, and Stack.

As election history dictates, a well-funded and viable third-party candidate usually takes votes away from the more similar candidate in a national election. This would mean a run for office by Stack could potentially hurt the President’s reelection campaign significantly.

The most famous example of this is the 1992 Presidential election where Bill Clinton triumphed over incumbent George H.W. Bush. Clinton’s victory was, at least partially, aided by the relatively conservative Texas businessman Ross Perot garnering almost 20% of the popular vote. While he won no electoral votes, he did cost Bush some.

The good news for President Trump and his supporters is that, according to the focus group participant who spoke to Politico, the results for Stack were not great. Participants said he “looked old” and “didn’t have the charisma it would take” to win the presidency.
