On Saturday at a rally in Long Island City, New York, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made the announcement that she is endorsing Bernie Sanders for the 2020 Democratic presidential bid. The rally was the biggest crowd 78-year-old Sanders has had on his campaign trail so far with over 25,000 people.

“When I was a baby, my family relied on Planned Parenthood for prenatal care. Then, Bernie Sanders fought for me. When I was growing up and education was being gutted for kids in the wrong zip code, Bernie Sanders fought for us,” Ocasio-Cortez told the cheering crowd. “When I was a child that relied on CHIP so that I could see a doctor, Bernie Sanders fought for a single-payer health care system. When the federal government decided to discriminate and abandon my queer family and friends, Bernie Sanders was putting his career on the line for us…”

Some critics say Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement is the kiss of death for Sanders, while others say that Sanders’ heart attack could be the best thing that happened to his campaign.

CBS News’ Nikole Killion interviewed Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders which aired on “CBS This Morning.”

Killion questioned Ocasio-Cortez, “As a woman of color, why back an old white guy? And is this the future of the party?”

“I’m actually very excited about this partnership because it shows what we have to do in our country,” Ocasio-Cortez answered. “We have to come together across race, across gender, across generations.”

Ocasio-Cortez told Killion that it was immediately after Sander’s heart surgery that she offered her endorsement to Sanders, calling his illness a “gut check” for her.

Killion asked Sanders if he would ask Ocasio-Cortez to be his running mate. “I think I’m too young for that,” AOC replied while laughing. Sanders also laughed and said: “There you go, she answered it.” He added that she would be part of his administration.
