On Tuesday, lawmakers will be discussing a bill to punish those who use the word “bitch” in a degrading or demeaning way. House Bill 3719, proposed by Rep. Daniel Hunt of the 13th Suffolk district, would add a new subsection to section 53 of chapter 272 of Massachusetts general laws.

Hunt’s bill states, “A person who uses the word ‘bitch’ directed at another person to accost, annoy, degrade or demean the other person shall be considered to be a disorderly person in violation of this section.” The penalty for the violation would be fines of up to $200 and up to six months in jail.

The one exception that would allow the use of the word ‘bitch’ is if the word was being reported by the person to whom the derogatory word was directed or by a witness.

Members of the Massachusetts Republican Party criticized Hunt’s bill on social media by tweeting, “Beacon Hill Democrats like (Rep. Dan Hunt) are fearlessly taking on the biggest problems facing the commonwealth.”

Mass GOP also tweeted, “Do you believe free speech matters? Judiciary Committee will be taking this up tomorrow at 1 pm. Come on down to the State House. Rooms A1&A2. First floor. Let ‘em have it.”
