Last Friday, Rep. Ilhan Omar filed for divorce just a month after telling a news reporter that she was not separated from her husband, Ahmed Hirsi. Omar cited “irretrievable breakdown of the marriage relationship” as the reason for the divorce.

Minnesota WCCO-TV news anchor Esme Murphy asked Omar, “Are you separated from your husband? Are you dating someone?”

Omar answered, “No, I am not. And like I said yesterday, I have no interest in allowing the conversation about my personal life to continue.”

Murphy questioned the freshman Minnesota representative the same day that Dr. Beth Mynett filed for divorce from her husband Tim Mynett, who is also Omar’s campaign consultant. Dr. Mynett stated the reason for the divorce was because her husband was having an affair with Omar and he was leaving her.

A little over a month later, Omar filed for divorce from her husband in Minnesota.

The New York Post reported that Omar and Hirsi had been living separately since March.

Omar’s attorney Jaime Driggs made a statement to TMZ about the break-up. “As with all marriages, this is intensely personal and a difficult time for their family,” Driggs said. “Just like any other family navigating this kind of transition, Ilhan wishes to have their privacy respected for themselves and their children and will not be commenting any further.” Diggs added that years of “speculation and innuendo from political opponents and the media” had “taken a significant toll on Ilhan, Ahmed, and their three children.”

Omar declined to answer Murphy’s questions about her short marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. According to public records, the brief marriage took place during the period when Omar had children with Hirsi and while she lived with Hirsi.

In September, Omar deleted an old tweet from 2013 that made some people question if she was hiding something. The tweet revealed that her father’s name is Nur Said. In Somali, it is tradition that the father’s first name becomes part of child’s last name.

A spokesperson for Omar claimaed that Nur Said is a nickname that means “happy light.” So why did Omar delete the old tweet?

Conservative group Judicial Watch filed a complaint and requested that the Office of Congressional Ethics examine Omar’s divorce filings with Nur Said.

Omar claimed that she does not know where Nur Said is and that she doesn’t know any names of his family members or friends who could assist in locating him. The lawmaker also swore she couldn’t locate him through social media even though she interacted with him over the years.

Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board fined Omar for using her campaign money to pay for a tax accountant to amend her tax returns after she fraudulently filed taxes jointly with Hirsi while she was not married to him, but another man.

What do you think, should Omar be penalized for perjury?
