On Wednesday night, reports emerged that a faceless “whistleblower” who is part of the U.S. intelligence community. The Washington Post reported that the anonymous source became so concerned with a “promise” that Trump made in a conversation with a foreign leader that they filed an official complaint with the inspector general of the intelligence community.

This anonymous complaint, was filed in early August with Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson and was brought to Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire approximately 2 weeks later. In an action that is drawing the ire of many congressional Democrats, Maguire has still not turned the complaint over to the House and Senate Intelligence Committees. The Director has said the complaint is, “not of urgent concern”.

Currently, nothing is known outside of this small intelligence community circle about who the whistleblower is, who the foreign leader in question is, or the nature of the conversation and “promise”. Also, nothing is publicly known about whether any actions have been taken by the U.S. or the President based on this “promise.

President Trump responded to these allegations today. He said in a tweet that he is well aware that many U.S. and/or foreign intelligence agencies may be listening in any time he speaks with a foreign leader. He followed up by saying that almost no one would be “dumb enough” believe he said something inappropriate knowing that many people could be listening. The President also noted that he, “would only do what is right anyway, and only do good for the USA!”
