Cheerleaders at North Stanly High School in New London, North Carolina posted a photos of themselves holding a “Trump 2020 Make America Great Again” banner. The banner holding incident happened before a football game, and the photo was shared on social media. The photo “caused people to feel uncomfortable” and led to a school investigation and an investigation by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

Students were asked to show their patriotism by wearing red, white, and blue for American Night at the football game. North Stanly junior Carson Palmer told WCNC-TV News that he brought the Trump banner because of American Night theme. “It was just what came to our mind when we thought of the United States of America,” said Palmer.

In a statement on the school’s website, officials from the school district wrote, “Stanly County Schools never makes political campaign endorsements. These policies ensure that all students, staff and visitors are able to attend school events in an environment that promotes students and not a particular political viewpoint.”

The cheerleaders were placed on probation for the remainder of the football season. The North Carolina High School Athletic Association commissioner Que Tucker told Stanly News & Press, “One of the rules we have is that every contest should be conducted in a wholesome, athletic environment. We take that to mean that it’s in an environment where good sportsmanship is shown, where people feel safe … that respect for all people participating is being shown.”

Superintendent Dr. Jeff James stated the school didn’t discipline the students involved because there weren’t any violations of the student code of conduct. James said school administrators will probably update the student code to include rules against political campaigning on school grounds during any sporting events.

Someone commented on Facebook, “I am totally shocked by this. I don’t care if you are a Republican or a Democrat, you should have the right to openly support the president of the USA!!”
