Ilhan Omar Accuses Trump of “Criminal Neglect” After Father Dies from COVID-19
On Friday, liberal lawmaker Rep. Ilhan Omar accused President Donald Trump of “criminal neglect” as she blamed the U.S. President for her father’s death from the COVID-19 virus.
In an interview with MSNBC, Omar said that her father was one of the 300,000 people who died as a result of coronavirus infection last June. The lawmaker said, “My father and over 300,000 people have lost their lives because of dangerous criminal neglect by Trump and his administration.”
She continued by saying that she agreed with House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn’s suggestion, saying that it is not enough to investigate and prosecute people responsible for the COVID-19 deaths. She believed that her father died simply because the country lacked leaders who truly cared about human lives.
The Democrat added that Trump failed to show his sense of compassion for the people who had passed away. She went on to say that it was extremely devastating, especially since her father had gone through a lot of challenges, only to lose his life over a COVID-19 infection. The House coronavirus subcommittee had since launched an investigation to look into the President’s involvement with the coronavirus related deaths. The subcommittee alleged that the then-Health and Human Services scientific advisor Paul Alexander, as well as a close Trump ally, Michael Caputo, had interfered with the COVID-19 research.
In a memo released by Clyburn’s office, he claimed that there is enough evidence to suggest that Trump officials made a “political interference” to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s pandemic response. In an email obtained by the House subcommittee, they cited that the then-HHS advisor wrote that he did not care how infectious the virus is, as long as the administration was able to make sensible decisions. Alexander noted that this includes protecting the elderly.
In addition, Alexander suggested that people who are considered “low-risk,” including kids, teens, and young adults with no conditions, should be encouraged to develop a herd immunity, “we want them to get infected,” the then HHS advisor wrote.
Clyburn wrote in his memo that the administration’s political meddling had cost the country’s coronavirus response. While the Democrats continued to accuse Trump of being responsible for the COVID-19 deaths, the country was able to find and produce a COVID-19 vaccine at a breakneck speed, thanks to the administration’s Operation WarpSpeed. Currently, the U.S. has started to inject the Pfizer vaccine into the Americans.
