On Monday, failed Presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton demanded to end the Electoral College, a process that secured the country’s election against mob rule.

Clinton, one of the New York electors, cast her vote in favor of former Vice-President, Joe Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris. While Clinton had cast her vote for her own party members, she continued to demand the total abolishment of the electoral college.

In a social media post, Clinton shared a photo celebrating her vote. “I believe we should abolish the Electoral College and select our president by the winner of the popular vote, same as every other office.” However, Clinton added, “But while it still exists, I was proud to cast my vote in New York for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.”

It is easy to understand why Clinton remained bitter about the Electoral College. During the 2016 election, the failed Presidential nominee earned nearly three million more votes than President Donald Trump. However, Trump was able to win the Presidency after he garnered a total of 306 votes against Clinton’s 232 votes.

At that time, Trump was able to win states such as Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, those highly contested states which have now flipped against the President by certifying Biden’s win. Currently, the President remained adamant in his refusal to concede with what he believed as “rigged”’ election results.

In an article from Breitbart News, the media outlet explained that the Founding Fathers created the Electoral College as a “safeguard against mob rule.” The proponents of the system believed that the Electoral College prevented densely populated areas such as the coastal states from dictating the outcome of the results. The media outlet continued by saying that it gives smaller states a “proportional voice” to help decide the country’s next commander-in-chief.

Several left-wing figures have also shared their opinions against the system. Some of the key figures include self-proclaimed Democratic socialist, Sen. Bernie Sanders who had also lost his presidential bid against Clinton and Biden in the past two Democratic primaries. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, both of whom also considered themselves socialists, also called to put an end to the age-old system.

In 2019, AOC mocked the Electoral College and even belittled the representative voice of the midwest after she posted a video of empty plains. She even sarcastically claimed that it was a “very efficient way” to choose the country’s next President.
