Super-rich singer and celebrity Stevie Wonder called for reparations for Black Americans during his performance in a rally for Joe Biden’s campaign in Detroit on Saturday. The drive-in rally was on Belle Isle and it featured the iconic singer. The pop icon has an estimated net worth of $100 million. Wonder grew up in Detroit and so he has a real connection to the city. He is just the latest celebrity to help the Biden campaign.

During the rally, Wonder shouted, “I know Joe Biden will do it. Give us reparations! For the work that we’ve all done for the last 400 years—unpaid,” the singer said. Biden has expressed support for the idea of reparations. In fact, he has supported the study on the feasibility of payments for slavery. This means that if he wins, Biden will probably implement reparations although the final form of the payment is unknown.

Reparations would mean making payments to descendants of those who came to the United States as slaves, although how to determine that would be difficult at best as the records are incomplete. Some are saying that it should just be a payment made to all Black Americans but the obvious problem with that is not all African Americans have slave ancestors.

There is also the question of the constitutionality of such a move because the payments would have to be based on race, which is something against the constitution. Many whites would also be against such a move because it would mean they are being penalized for something that they did not commit. Not all whites in the past were slave owners. Only a small number of people in the past were actually slave owners and so it would be unfair now to have people to pay for reparations now when they nor their ancestors had anything to do with it.

The implementation of reparations is just one of the many impractical and damaging policies that would be implemented by Biden should he win the election. Another policy that he has backed is the phasing out of the oil industry in favor of renewable energy. This act alone would cause millions of job losses, not just from the oil industry but others that rely on it. But Biden has already committed himself to the policy and so would probably wreck the American economy if he comes to power.
