Is AOC Planning to Run for President?
Radical Democrat and vocal anti-Trump supporter, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez opened up about her plans of running for higher positions, and even entertained the possibility of becoming the next U.S. President.
In an interview for Vanity Fair, AOC, who is serving as the youngest representative in the legislative branch opened up about the possibility of running for higher office. The lawmaker, who had gained notoriety for her strong radical-left wing agenda admitted that she does not plan to stay in the House. “I don’t see myself really staying where I’m at for the rest of my life,” AOC said.
The freshman lawmaker added that she planned to move beyond the House of Representatives. However, the news of AOC’s plan is nothing new. In fact, as early as January, the New York Magazine reported that those who are close to her confirmed that the Democrat had discussed the possibility of her replacing Mayor Bill de Blasio as the next mayor of New York City. Unfortunately, the plan did not materialize.
The Democrat continued by saying that she sees herself as an effective leader for higher national positions. “I don’t want to aspire to a quote-unquote higher position just for the sake of that title or just for the sake of having a different or higher position,” AOC said. She also added that she had constantly assessed herself to how she could play a bigger role if the Democrats would take over the White House in the upcoming 2020 general elections. In fact, she also implied that she is not closing her doors to plans of running as the country’s next President.
However, while AOC was able to attract a big social media following, the polls suggest that she might have difficulty winning the election. Currently, the freshman Democrat is seen as a possible successor to Sen. Chuck Schumer or Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. According to a Zogby poll which was released in May 2020, AOC only earned 21 percent of the votes, as compared to Schumer, which had garnered 54 percent. Moreover, the lawmaker fared much better than Gillibran who lost by 17 points.
While AOC’s polls seemed problematic, pollster Jonathan Zogby believed that there is still a possibility of AOC winning against the two lawmakers if she can successfully move public opinion. Zogby believed that AOC’s ability to energize young voters with her radical left-wing agenda should be a cause to worry for both Schumer and Gillibrand. In fact, AOC’s strongest points are among younger voters, and single women.
In another report from The Patriot Hill, AOC had also expressed her plan to move for a more liberal and radical administration if Biden wins the upcoming elections. She went on claiming that Democrats have a huge responsibility to show what a left-wing administration can accomplish. Some of the lawmaker’s agenda includes defunding the police, putting an end to the country’s oil industry and abolishing the American suburbs to give way for low-cost housing.
