On Monday, social media pundits blasted New Yorker staff writer and longtime CNN analyst Jeffrey Toobin, for allegedly masturbating during a Zoom meeting.

The New Yorker immediately suspended the analyst following the allegation. In a report from Vice, the media outlet cited two anonymous sources who confirmed that they saw Toobin masturbating during a conference call. “It was unclear how much each individual person on the call saw, but both of the people we spoke to said that they saw Toobin” masturbating during an “election simulation,” Vice News wrote.

According to the media outlet’s anonymous sources, the incident took place during an “election simulation.” They claimed that as a part of the strategy session, the Democrats and Republicans were instructed to go into their own break rooms for 10 minutes. During the break, the sources claimed that Toobin appeared to be logged in on a second video call. When the group returned from their respective breaks, the CNN analyst lowered his camera. At that instance, the entire group saw Toobin touching his penis before he left the call. A few minutes later, the CNN analyst returned to the session, seemingly unaware that his colleagues saw his lewd acts.

Hollywood and political figures immediately reacted to the reports. In a Twitter video, O.J. Simpson criticized Toobin’s recent scandal. In the footage, the famed football superstar claimed, “At least Pee Wee Herman was in an X-rated movie theater. I’m just saying.” In the 1990s, Toobin covered Simpson’s public trial against the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Simpson.

In addition, Rolling Stone contributing editor Matt Taibi also responded to the incident. In a Twitter post, Taibi laughed at the fact that Toobin should invent a “time travel” so that he could keep the words “dick” and “Zoom” from his obituary.

NYT TV critic and author James Poniewozik also chimed in with the insults. In his post, Poniewozik wrote that such incidents made him want to know less.

On Monday, Toobin issued an apology. He claimed that he did not realize he was “visible” during the conference call. He explained that when he thought that by muting the video meant that people could not see him.

Left-wing media outlet CNN also issued a statement that they had given Toobin some time off to settle his personal issues.
