CNN News Anchor Anderson Cooper claimed that President Donald Trump does not care about the “health and safety” of children as schools gear towards reopening.

On Wednesday, Cooper said, “Today the president of the United States did something rare: He expressed a notion that we can all agree on, that kids belong in the classroom.” However, the host claimed that Trump does not care about what it will cost, as long as he wins his re-election bid, “he doesn’t actually care about those kids at all. He doesn’t care about their health and safety, nor the health of their teachers and parents.”

Cooper continued that Trump “bragged” about his capability to make changes in the CDC guidelines to “weaken” its strict health measures. The host lamented how a “world-renowned organization,” who had made science-based guidelines for students and teachers, would step down to meet the President’s orders. Some of the guidelines include: observing a six-feet distance, having masks, ensuring there’s adequate airflow, and enough rooms to wash hands.

The host also lambasted Vice President Mike Pence for supporting Trump’s decision which was a result of purely “magical thinking” which was written by their advisers “Diamond and Silk.” Moreover, Cooper also criticized Trump for warning schools that refused to re-open. He then quotes the President’s tweet which read how other countries were able to reopen.

To discredit the President’s statement, Cooper went on to show a graph of how Germany only had 279 reported coronavirus cases in a day. On the other hand countries such as Denmark only has 10, Norway has 11, and Sweden with 283. Collectively, these countries had 583 new cases in a day against a 100 million population.

Cooper then went back to discuss the situation in the United States. He said that the country faced 60,000 new cases, and had surpassed 3 million infections since the outbreak started. He also delved into the loss of lives claiming that the country saw 160,000 deaths due to the virus, while 35 states continued to see a steady rise of coronavirus infections. Cooper warned the public “ That is the reality today. Tomorrow looks worse, not better.”

The CNN host responded to Trump’s Twitter post. The President announced that schools across the country should re-open in the fall.

Then, the President followed up with another tweet as he explained how the rest of the Democratic party refused to re-open schools, citing that their accusations are entirely based on “political reasons” rather than a real health concern.

Yesterday, the President made a further stand as he claimed that school re-openings are possible. He also cited countries such as Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden who chose to re-open their schools without any “problems.” He also disagreed with the CDC’s strict guidelines and described it as “impractical” and promised that he will soon meet with the organization to further discuss the issue.

In a report from Fox News, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos stated that the education department is putting serious consideration to “withhold funds” from schools that refuse to reopen. Even the administration is working alongside the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to allow students to go back to school.
