As nationwide protests and riots erupted across the U.S., Democrat and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot had a ridiculous explanation as to why there is a sudden surge of violence, thanks to a perfect “storm” of guns and coronavirus.

During a press conference, Lightfoot claimed that the city’s problem with violence is “complicated.” She went on to proceed with a simple explanation, saying, “We have way too many guns on the streets.”

According to the Washington Examiner, Lightfoot “suggested” that the economic shutdown had played an important factor in “creating a perfect storm.” The media outlet also claimed that George Floyd’s death had fueled even more anger in the community.

Unfortunately, the violence caused a 34% increase in the number of homicides starting from 246 deaths in 2019, to 329 deaths in 2020. Moreover, shooting incidents rose to a whopping 42%, jumping from 978 incidents last year, to 1,348 incidents this year. In fact, just a little over five days in the month of July, the city saw as many as 84 people who were wounded from the shooting incidents, while 18 were killed.

The death toll included innocent civilians, particularly children who were as young as one year old. The numbers escalated during the Fourth of July holiday, with at least 16 people killed, including a 7-year-old girl who was spending the holidays in her grandmother’s house and a teenage boy who was killed during the weekend.

According to reports from the ABC News, four armed men suddenly opened fire on Saturday, where a large gathering was taking place in the street in the Englewood neighborhood. Instantly, two men died at the scene, while two others were rushed to the hospital. The fatalities included a 14-year-old boy.

In a separate incident, a 7-year-old girl who was standing on her grandmother’s sidewalk was shot in the head at around 7 p.m. According to authorities, the suspects got out of the car and began shooting.

The Democrat also condemned the senseless killings. On Sunday, Lightfoot addressed the issue in a Twitter post, “Tonight, a 7-year-old girl in Austin joined a list of teenagers and children whose hopes and dreams were ended by the barrel of a gun.”

Despite increasing support from Democrats, especially among far-left politicians to defund the police, the Chicago Mayor deployed 1,200 officers to protect the streets.

While the residents were not prohibited from owning guns, the state laws ensured that each gun owner has to be subjected under intensive background checks, and should obtain a Firearm Owner Identification (or FOID) before purchasing a gun.
