Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is reportedly not in agreement with the rest of his party in pushing for the defunding of the police, according to his spokesperson, who released an official statement on Monday.

Last week, Biden broke his coronavirus isolation to deliver his first speech regarding the issue of the Black Lives Matter protesters and his fellow Democrats calling to defund the police force across the United States. He promised that if he wins, within 100 days of being president, he would form a law enforcement accountability panel.

Then on Monday morning, Biden issued a statement through his spokesperson, saying that he does not support the idea of defunding America’s police.

“As his criminal justice proposal made clear months ago,” Biden’s spokesperson, Andrew Bates, said in the statement, “Vice President Biden does not believe that police should be defunded.”

His spokesperson continued to say that the former vice president supports the urgent need for reform in funding involving public schools, mental health and substance abuse treatment, and summer programs. He says that he wants to support funding a community that will help improve the relationships between police officers and residents and provide training that is “needed to avert tragic, unjustifiable deaths.”

Biden’s statement may come as a shock to far-left Democrats and activists who came up with the “defund the police” idea. Other Democrats who were at the forefront of BLM protests have also decided to dodge the new slogan proposed by the protesters, including Sen. Kamala Harris.

Trump’s campaign was quick to issue a response after Biden’s spokesperson released their statement. The campaign responded that Biden could not be left off the hook for issuing a weak statement from a “mid-level staffer,” adding that the public hasn’t even heard Joe Biden himself utter a single statement regarding the “defunding the police” issues. The campaign further said that Americans have no chance of knowing where the presumptive Democratic nominee really stands until he comes out of his basement and issues his own official statement. “The ‘Defund the Police’ train has already left the Democrat station, and Joe Biden is merely a weak passenger,” the campaign concluded.
