On Tuesday, the funeral for 46-year-old African-American George Floyd killed in police custody in Minneapolis was held at the Fountain of Praise Church in Houston, Texas. Several memorial services were also held for Floyd Last week in Minneapolis, North Carolina, and New York.

The funeral featured hours of gospel music and tributes from family members, friends, spiritual leaders, and politicians, including presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, who delivered a video message. “Why, in this nation, do too many black Americans wake up knowing that they could lose their life in the course of just living their life? We cannot leave this moment thinking we can once again turn away from racism that stings at our very soul, from systemic abuse that still plagues American life,” Biden said.

Other Democrat politicians like Reps. Al Green and Sheila Jackson-Lee (TX), also graced the nationally-televised funeral and paid tribute. Lee compared Floyd’s death to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, saying that he had been killed by wicked men for the greater good. While Green declared that George Floyd not only changed the United States but the whole world.

Members of Floyd’s family paid tribute to Floyd and recalled their memories with him. Floyd’s niece, Brooke Williams, was especially emotional as she delivered her speech. “That officer showed no remorse while watching my uncle’s soul leave his body. He begged and pleaded many times just for you to get up, but you just pushed harder. Why must the system be corrupt and broken?” Williams asked. Then Williams continued, “Someone said, ‘Make America Great Again,’ but when has America ever been great?” referring to President Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign slogan.

Other religious leaders also offered their prayers. Rev. William “Bill” Lawson, pastor emeritus of the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, appealed in his speech, saying, “Obviously, the first thing that we have to do is to clean out the White House.”
