New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio vows to cut funding for the New York City Police Department (NYPD) while violent crimes in the city continue to soar.

On Sunday, during a news conference, Mayor de Blasio declared that he would “be moving funding from the NYPD to youth initiatives and social services” in its upcoming budget request.

His announcement came as rioters, protesters, and looters continue to wreak havoc and chaos in the Big Apple. The protesters who started as supporters of Minneapolis man George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, have turned into looters and arsonists who have robbed, destroyed, and burned down businesses and public property. The protesters also turned to attack NYPD officers over the last week. The protesters and ANTIFA’s latest agenda is to call for the defunding of police departments across the country.

De Blasio is also looking to reduce the NYPD’s authority in New York City. That includes altering the existing law that protects disciplinary records of police officers from the public. Another one is they will take NYPD’s jurisdiction over street vendor enforcement and certain code violations.

“The details will be worked out in the budget process in the weeks ahead,” de Blasio said. “But I want people to understand that we are committed to shifting resources to ensure that the focus is on our young people.”

De Blasio’s decision comes following the numerous violent crimes happening in and out of New York City. These crimes continue to rise even as the city is placed under lockdown due to the Wuhan coronavirus.

Crimes like murder, burglary, and grand larceny have seen an uptick in the last months, with murder jumping over 94% compared to last year.

Protesters and especially Democrats have been strongly pushing for their “Defund the Police” agenda, not even thinking or realizing that communities and innocent residents will be the most affected ones.
