Presidential candidate Joe Biden appeared on CNN on Friday and tried to walk back his controversial statement regarding black voters. The former vice president now claims that he was only referring to the host of the show Charlamagne tha God when he said that, “If you got a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or for Trump then you ain’t Black.” That statement caused a great deal of controversy and backlash.

Biden is trying to shift the blame on to Charlamagne, saying that the host was baiting him during the interview. “The leader I’ve always been. I apologized immediately for responding to Charlamagne, who was baiting me, and if you looked at that film you see I was smiling at him. And I was referring to him, I wasn’t referring to all African-Americans. But I should have never said it,” Biden said during the interview.

That statement was one of the major gaffes committed by Biden which has been causing a lot of problems for his campaign. He has tried apologizing for the comment, but now it seems that his advisors have told him to just blame Charlamagne for the whole thing, an unwise move altogether since that would alienate the host who has a significant number of followers.

Biden is trying to paint himself to be a supporter of the black community. In reality, he supported the 1994 crime bill which targeted black individuals and had a significant effect on the African American community. Even harder to defend is the fact that he is closely associated with ranking members of the Ku Klux Klan. That’s something that his supporters are willing to overlook even though they are willing to accuse President Trump of racism. Biden’s record and performance as a politician is highly questionable when it comes to racism when it’s closely examined.
