To boost presumptive Democratic nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden’s lackluster campaign, left-wing supporters have recently launched a committee called “Draft Michelle Obama” in hopes that the former first lady will soon become Biden’s running mate.

The committee had filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and had the support of Democratic fundraisers Nadine Hack and Mack Wilbourn.

According to the campaign’s goal, their aim was to establish a “substantial grassroots support for a potential Michelle Obama,” as well as to increase media attention, citing that the nominee has “the power to beat Donald Trump.” The committee, which was launched on Monday, claimed that Obama would not only benefit from the ticket but as well as the entire country.

However, the committee stated that if Obama would not receive the nomination, they will still continue to support Biden’s pick, in order to “defeat the most dangerous incumbent in the history of our nation.” The group-based their assumption on Biden’s previous statement, in which he claimed that he would pick the former first lady as his running mate “in a heartbeat.” Biden described Obama as “brilliant, knows her way around, and a really fine woman.” He also claimed that the “Obamas are great friends.” Moreover, Biden’s wife, Jill, also shared the same sentiments, claiming that the former first lady would make a “wonderful” vice president.”

On the downside, Obama’s close associates slammed down the rumors. In an interview for media outlet, The Hill, Former White House official Valerie Jarrett claimed that the former first lady had never “expressed an interest in running for office.” Jarret added that Obama simply “doesn’t want the job.” Even Obama herself had also addressed issues of a possible VP ticket. In her upcoming Netflix documentary, the former first lady claimed that being out of the White House, and away from public scrutiny had been an “absolutely freeing” experience.

Just last week, Obama faced a backlash after sharing a hypocritical statement, in which she urged Americans to stay at home, while former President Barack Obama enjoyed the weekend playing golf in Virginia. The former First Lady aired the message in Washington DC, days after Barrack was spotted in Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville.

While Michelle had expressed her disinterest in running for office, recent polls showed that Democrats preferred failed Democratic nominee, Elizabeth Warren, as Biden’s VP. In a CBS News/YouGov poll that was conducted between April 28 to May 1, 2020, 71% of Democratic voters wanted Warren as Biden’s running mate. On the other hand, 59% also claimed that they wanted Sleepy Joe to consider Sen. Kamala Harris, followed by a 50% from former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, with Sen. Amy Klobuchar coming close behind by 49%.

Last March, Biden announced that he had committed to choosing a woman as his running mate, claiming that “If I’m elected president, my cabinet, my administration will look like the country.”
