Last week, Congress gathered on Capitol Hill to pass a $484 billion supplementary coronavirus relief package, which is intended to top up funding streams included in the relief package known as CARES.

Required to leave the safety of their lavish homes and take a mini-break from strict social distancing orders, members of the Congress didn’t fail to show up in style with their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs).

The government officials were expected to be good examples of Americans who wore face masks correctly to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. Given the task to set an example and follow the advice of the country’s leading health experts when it comes to using protective masks when going out in public, it seems like an astounding number of lawmakers dismissed the advice or simply did not know how to follow simple instructions. As one by one, as they reached the podium, they removed their masks as they went to address their fellow lawmakers.

According to research and advice from health experts, the coronavirus can be transmitted through human to human transmission and is most likely to spread by way of “microscopic saliva droplets” during close contact conversations.

However, despite this information, US reps decided that speaking and showing themselves in all their glory is more important than keeping their mouths and noses under the protection of a mask.

Conservative political strategist Caleb Hull compiled some of the best, well, worst examples of US reps misusing their masks, starting with staunch anti-Trumper House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who did misuse not only her mask but also forgot basic personal hygiene.

“Pelosi wipes her dripping nose with her bare, shivering hand and then wipes that hand all over the House floor podium used by all other members of Congress.”

One rep seemingly forgot that his mask ACTUALLY needs to go on his face.

This one looks like she’s just using it as a fashion accessory.

Some were close enough from following the protocol, but…

Others could not even be bothered to wear actual protective masks and came with their makeshift ones.

Weren’t they afraid of the possible saliva spray coming from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as she goes into one of her meltdowns and frantically waves her unworn mask in her hands?

And of course, Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) refused to wear his mask while he was speaking and said that as soon as he stops speaking, he’ll wear it again. He was clearly missing the point.

As they are in the public eye and leaders of their respective legislations, US reps should become good examples of law-abiding citizens following health protocols because if not, how do we expect normal Americans to follow suit?
