A Democrat lawmaker from Georgia was forced to resign from his position and abandon his plans for reelection after his fellow Democrats pressured him for endorsing President Donald Trump.

State Representative Vernon Jones made the news last week when he went against his Democratic party and endorsed Trump. Jones stated that he would not be switching parties, but he endorses Trump as he praises the president’s handling of the economy and the coronavirus pandemic. He also explained that Trump’s support for historically black colleges and criminal justice initiatives drove him to endorse the president officially.

On Wednesday, Jones announced his official resignation and withdrawal from the upcoming reelection. Jones explained that his decision was mainly due to the pressure and attacks he and his family have been receiving since the moment he openly endorsed President Donald Trump.

The lawmaker said that he was sick and tired watching his family get attacked and harrassed by the Democratic party just because he put his country first before his party. He also insisted that he likes to be an “independent thinker.”

Aside from attacks on his family, Jones felt the intensified efforts of his fellow Georgia Democrats to make him feel like he made a mistake backing Trump. In fact, as an immediate “punishment” and a sign of pettiness, just hours after Jones revealed his endorsement, Democrats in Georgia’s legislature announced that they would support Jones’s primary challenger.

“I endorsed the White guy (Donald J. Trump) that let Blacks out of jail, and they endorsed the White guy (Joe Biden) that put Blacks in jail,” Jones continued, explaining his decision to back Trump. Jones also enumerated numerous reasons why it’s no surprise that a Black man supports Trump. “Isn’t he the president that ushered in the lowest unemployment rate for blacks before the pandemic crisis? Isn’t he the president that signed the Criminal Justice Reform Act? And finally, isn’t he the president that overwhelmingly supported, financially, historical black colleges.”

Jones continued to assert his 100 percent support for Trump and called on every patriot and American in the country, whatever their race, religion, or gender orientation to join him in “reelecting Donald J. Trump as the president, our next president, our reelected president of the United States.”

Jones officially posted his endorsement for Trump in his official Twitter account on April 15. He captioned his video, “I’m a Georgia State Representative and lifelong Democrat. I didn’t leave the Democratic Party. The party left me.”

Jones further said that the left hates him because they can’t control him. “They can stay mad,” the lawmaker concluded.
