In a move that might further divide the already fragmented Democratic party, Senator Bernie Sanders said that it is relevant to talk about the allegations of sexual assault against his former rival, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. Sanders made the statement during an appearance on the This Morning program of CBS. “I think it’s relevant to talk about anything and I think any woman who feels that she was assaulted has every right in the world to stand up and make her claims,” Sanders said.

The statement was made after the accusation of sexual assault against Biden started to gain traction in the media. Biden’s accuser is Tara Reade who is a former campaign staff. She came out last year but more recently, she appeared on a podcast during which she detailed what allegedly happened and how Biden assaulted her. While Biden has always been accused of being creepy around women and children, there had been no serious allegations of sexual misconduct until Reade came along. She said that she was shocked by Biden’s actions at the time because she looked up to Biden back then as he was supposedly a champion for women’s rights. The act supposedly happened in the early 1990s.

Another prominent Democrat who called for a more open discussion of Reade’s allegations is Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, who said that it is legitimate to talk about the accusations. While Cortez didn’t come out saying that she completely believes her, that was enough for Reade to thank her in a tweet, saying that Cortes was actually the first member of Congress to address what had happened to her in public. That just goes to show that the only time Democrats believe in “believing all women” is when the accused is a conservative. They would not even address the accusations publicly.

As expected, the former vice president’s campaign has denied the accusation, saying that it was untrue and that “This absolutely did not happen.” The rest of the Democratic party seems to be solidly behind Biden right now with Nancy Pelosi coming out saying that she is satisfied with the explanation given by Biden in connection with the accusations. She did not offer any explanations, however, as to how she was satisfied by his response or whether she has investigated the matter.
