In a newly released document from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) firebrand lawmaker, Rep Ilhan Omar was set to pay her husband’s political firm a whopping $1 million by the end of 2020.

Based on the lawmaker’s federal campaign finance report, Omar had already paid $291,059 to her husband’s firm, the E Street Group, within a three month period. This includes advertising, travel, fundraising, and other related services. Each month, Omar made $67,000, which was broken down to $50,000 for digital advertising, while 12,000 for consulting and $5,000 for another digital consulting. While the other $102,000 were spent on postage, campaign travels, as well as campaign merchandise.

The documents which were retrieved by the Star Tribune showed that based on her current campaign rate, Omar is set to pay around $1 million by the end of the year. Indeed, things are looking up for the E Street Group since the amount is more than double the $523,000 the firm had earned for the entire year.

According to the Tribune, it is not illegal for politicians to put their own friends and relatives in their campaign payroll. As long as they spent the fund on legitimate expenses, and maintain a fair market value.

However, what was critical is that before Tim Mynett’s divorce, Omar was only paying a small two digits sum to the political firm. After the divorce was finalized in December, the E Group started charging the Democrat $50,000 on a regular monthly basis.

As a result, a concerned conservative group, the National Legal Policy Center, came forward to file a complaint against Omar’s overspending. Peter Flaherty chairman of the group, explained to the Daily Mail that commonly, candidates often keep close tabs on their campaign team, to ensure that they will not be overcharged. However, experts said that having the chief fundraiser as a lover might change things, as the money will be directed to the family’s own bank account. Flaherty described Omar’s campaign looks more like a “dowry.” He added that “her campaign finance disclosures read more like a wedding registry where friends can make gifts to the happy couple.”

The lawmaker had initially hired Mynett in 2018, to help her with her congressional run. Things did not go smoothly for the happy couple as their relationship was filled with allegations of infidelity. In fact, Mynett’s ex-wife had alleged a couple of having an affair in August of 2019.

Even Omar’s ex-husband, Ahmed Hirsi, had caught the two in their pajamas in Omar’s Washington apartment, which prompted the couple’s separation. Omar had also faced accusations that she had married her brother to obtain a green card visa.

Omar defended her relationship with Mynett by accusing the allegations as a part of a Republican smear campaign. In a tweet, the Democrat claimed that her relationship with her political consultant started before 2018. She also claimed that they consulted campaign attorneys to ask if there might be any legal issues that the two might face along the way.

“As a family, we are committed to the practice of joy, compassion, and love in our politics. And we are giving ourselves the permission to be happy and hope others will as well.,” the lawmaker wrote. However, she refused to comment or answer any questions about the issue.
