On Wednesday, during a private virtual fundraiser, presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden claimed that some of Donald Trump’s supporters believe the notion that “Mexicans are rapists” and that “all Muslims are bad.”

The former vice president’s sharp remarks brought back memories of the failed presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton in 2016, where she openly smeared white, working-class Trump supporters as “a basket of deplorables.”

The event hosted by the founder and CEO of Masimo Corporation, and which drew 55 online attendees, held a Q&A session. When Biden was asked if he could win over Trump supporters, the former vice president laughed off the idea and answered, “probably not.”

Biden claimed that there are voters who only support President Trump because they like the idea that he is involved in the “politics of division.” “They really support the notion that you know, all Mexicans are rapists and all Muslims are bad and…dividing this nation based on ethnicity, race. This is the one [sic] of the few presidents who succeeded by deliberately trying to divide the country, not unite the country,” he continued.

However, notoriously gaffe-filled Biden immediately backtracked and claimed that based on the data collected by his campaign, Trump’s “base” is among the people Biden “grew up with, white working-class, high-school educated people.” So he also admitted that he is hoping to attract Trump supporters to his side.

“The people who voted Republican last time…who don’t want to vote for Trump, whether they want to vote for me or not is a different story, but they don’t want to vote for Trump,” Biden said during the online event. He further claimed that these voters were looking for an alternative and that he hopes to God that he can be the one to provide that.

“Sleepy” and “Creepy” Joe Biden continued to believe that the Democratic party would be able to win people back because he claims that Trump doesn’t “give a damn” about dignity and that he has “no sense of empathy.”

On Thursday, Trump’s campaign fired back, saying that Joe Biden finally reveals his “disdain for certain Americans” that just hurts as much as Hillary’s “deplorables” comment back in 2016. The campaign further claimed that the former vice president labeled “working-class voters racist, xenophobic and Islamophobic.”

Back in September 2016, the failed presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, made her “basket of deplorables” comments at a fundraiser in New York City. “You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic—you name it.
