Former Vice President and leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said that he could “hardly wait to debate” President Donald Trump if he becomes the official nominee of the Democratic party. In an interview on NBC’s “Today,” Biden said that the President is afraid of him.

The show’s host Savannah Guthrie asked Biden about why he thought Trump was criticizing the Democrats for making things difficult for Sanders. “I think the one thing the President doesn’t want to do from the very beginning is face me because I will beat him, period. Period,” Biden said. “He has done everything in his power—he’s even risked his presidency because he doesn’t want to face me. It’s simple.”

Biden continued, “The President does not want me to be the nominee. For good reason, I suppose.” The former Vice President went on to say that harmed the middle class of the country and that his administration has been a disaster. He added that he was eager and cannot wait until he can debate the President.

Some analysts, however, are not so sure if Biden can handle the President in a debate. “The Young Turks” host Cenk Uygur, for example, said that “Biden is not going to beat Trump. “Biden is either near senile or actually senile. Watch any of the tapes. And Biden lies nonstop. He is going to get caught! Okay, the media is covering for him but they’re not going to be able to cover when the Republicans come for him and when Trump comes for him. He’s not going to beat Trump!” Cenk said on The Young Turks.

There is real concern about the former Vice President’s mental state. He has never really been a performer during the debates. The moment that the media has claimed to be his great performances are those that are free from blunders.

Biden has tried running twice before. In 1988 his bid ended in failure and disappointment when it was discovered that he plagiarized someone else’s biography and that he padded his performance in law school. His 2008 attempt was so lackluster that when he was forced to drop out, no one noticed. He was lucky enough to be picked as Obama’s running mate, catapulting him to the stature he now enjoys. But mostly, it has been luck that has taken him to where he is, and when he faces President Trump in the debate stage, his luck might run out.
