Comedian John Mulaney made a joke on Saturday at NBC by suggesting that senators should stab Trump just like how Roman Emperor Julius Caesar was assassinated.

Trump whom Mulaney likened to Cesar as “a powerful maniac” joked that “It is a Leap Year, as I said. Leap Year began in 45 B.C. under Julius Caesar. This is true, he started the Leap Year in order to correct the calendar, and we still do it to this day.”

Mulaney continued, “Another thing that happened under Julius Caesar, he was such a powerful maniac that all the senators grabbed knives, and they stabbed him to death. That would be an interesting thing if we brought that back now.” He added, “I asked my lawyer if I could make that joke, he said, let me call another lawyer, and that lawyer said yes. I don’t want to dwell on politics, but I dislike the Founding Fathers immensely. I hate when people are like, God has never created such a great group of men than the Founding Fathers. Yeah, the ’92 Bulls. That’s a perfect metaphor for the United States. When I was a boy, the United States was like Michael Jordan in 1992. Now the United States is like Michael Jordan now.”

Indeed, some social media users were not happy with Mulaney’s joke.

One Twitter user asked: “So apparently it’s funny to joke about assassinating the President of the United States.”

Another commented, “If ⁦@NBCSNL⁩ thinks it is ok [assassinate] people they disagree with, shouldn’t it work both ways for sh** TV shows?”

Here are some of the other comments: One wrote: “What is wrong with these people like [Mulaney]? Imagine if that had been said about Obama? These people are full of hate. They hate Americans that voted for Trump”

Another commented: Lost a fan in me with the hateful snowflake bit against our President. Hopefully, the Secret Service will try to explain a little better how stupid that was.”

The comedian had been noted for bashing Trump in his stand-up performances. During his Netflix special, Mulaney gave out his infamous “horse loose in the hospital” joke. In his performance, Mulaney toys with the mic cord and says “I’ve never really cared about politics, never talked about them much,” he says. “But last November, the strangest thing happened!” He added, “Here’s how I try to look at it, and this is just me: this guy being the president, it’s like there’s a horse loose in a hospital. I think eventually everything’s going to be okay, but I have no idea what’s going to happen next. And neither do any of you, and neither do your parents because there’s a horse loose in the hospital!”

Mulaney went on to say, “It’s not good. It’s confusing because every day we just have to follow the horse, and some days it’s like, ‘The horse used the elevator?’ You know those days when you’re like, ‘Is the horse smart?’ And then we’re all just like, ‘Why hasn’t the horse-catcher caught the horse?’ and then the horse is like, ‘I have fired the horse-catcher.”
