As Democrats descended into chaos trying to beat out their opponent during Tuesday night’s Charleston debate, CBS moderators miserably failed to keep everyone on track with the debate rules.

The rules were relatively simple, each candidate was given one minute and 15 seconds to answer direct questions. However, the rules went down the drain as the candidates got into a shouting match and moderators Gayle King, Norah O’Donnell, Margaret Brennan of “Face the Nation” and correspondents Major Garrett and Bill Whitaker failed to mediate and keep everyone on track.

The charade happened when Sen. Bernie Sanders noticed that the other nominees were teaming up to go against him. “I’m hearing my name mentioned a little bit. I wonder why,” Sanders said. On the other hand, gay-war veteran Mayor Pete Buttigieg kept on interrupting and challenging Sander’s statements. The exchange resulted in a shouting match and neither Sanders nor Buttigieg were willing to back down.

In the background, moderators desperately asked the candidates to stick into the one minute and 15-second rule, but without any success as the two nominees kept on speaking at the same time. “One at a time please,” a moderator helplessly pleaded. “The moderator guys!” Sanders shouted at one point after he was allowed to respond.

Former Vice President Joe Biden vehemently complained about the lack of discipline in the debate. Biden concluded, “I guess the only way to do this is to jump in and speak twice as long as you should.”

At one point, Gayle King reminded everyone about the time limit. Biden responded saying “Good idea.”

“Good idea, right, Mr. Vice President? I promise Mr. Vice President, we are going to get to you today,” King said. “You keep promising me that, but you haven’t done it yet,” Biden gave a harsh reply. King denied Biden’s accusation and said: “I’ve never broken a promise.”

Biden snapped, “I know how you cut me off all the time but I’m not going to be quiet anymore. OK?” The former vice president also tried to cut off Stayer’s response saying: “No, I’m not out of time. He spoke overtime, and I’m gonna talk,” and went ahead with his argument. On the other hand, Sen. Elizabeth Warren sneakily stole more time by speaking even before moderators could react. As the Democrats looked like angry school children violently raising their hands and bickering at each other, social media users were quick to mock the moderators for their failure to keep everything in line.

In a deleted tweet, former New York congressman Steve Israel wrote: “The CBS moderators are like referees at a hockey game. Kind of looking on as fists flail.”

Finally, after a long night of chaos, the event concluded awkwardly.

“Well, thank you, that concludes our debate,” moderator Norah O’Donnell said, as the music for a break began to play. “No. We have time for one more break, Norah, one more break,” King interrupted. “Time flies when you’re having fun.”

When the commercial break ended, both moderators simply went ahead to confirm that the debate was yes—finally over.
