George Zimmerman, the man who was acquitted of homicide charges in the 2012 shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida, is suing Florida prosecutors and Martin’s family. He is claiming that they all created false evidence to be used against him in his murder trial.

Attorneys for Zimmerman filed the lawsuit in Polk County Circuit Court on Wednesday and are looking for $100 million in damages. These damages include “defamation, abuse of civil process and conspiracy.” The main claim in the suit is that a key witness, Rachel Jeantel, was a fake who was coached by the family and their lawyers.

This lawsuit brings the George Zimmerman/ Trayvon Martin case back into the national news 7 years after the incident. The entire situation stems from Zimmerman, who was a member of the Neighborhood Watch in his Florida community, shot an unarmed Trayvon Martin who was allegedly returning to his father’s house after going to the store in February of 2012.

The shooting gained huge national attention with strong voices on both sides calling for justice. Zimmerman claimed he acted in self-defense and was covered under Florida’s “stand your ground” statute. There were also claims of racism after the shooting of a black teen by a white man. It was this incident that lead to the creation of the group Black Lives Matter. In July of 2013, Zimmerman was acquitted of both second-degree murder and manslaughter.
