Just over 24-hours after Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced Democrat plans to go forward with impeachment, the hashtag #PresidentPelosi began trending on twitter. This was when members of the social media platform began to put together that if somehow both President Trump and Vice President Pence were forced out of office, the next person in the line of succession would be the Speaker of the House.

The Constitution of the United States designates that the Vice President will become president if the current president is no longer able to fulfil their duties. In 1792, further guidelines were established to include a longer succession list whereby the Speaker of the House would be next in line, followed by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of the Treasury, and so on down the line.

Much of this speculation is based on a statement made by President Trump that liberals are taking as a sign that the President is trying to “take his VP down with him”. In the statement, where President Trump continued to assert that there was no wrongdoing, he invited Congress to look at both his and Vice President Pence’s conversations with Ukrainian leaders. He said Congress is welcome to and that all the conversations are “perfect”.

This has led to scores of left-wing twitter users celebrating the fact that they believe both President Trump and Vice President Pence will be impeached and made to leave office in due time and that Speaker Pelosi will then ascend to the Presidency.

Within the #PresidentPelosi hashtag there were also plenty of dissenters. Many Republicans voiced their beliefs that Pelosi becoming president was both premature at best and even “delusional”.
