The always incredibly liberal Saturday Night Live has fired a comedian who they just recently hired for the new season because of backlash to politically incorrect jokes he made on an episode of his podcast.

Comedian Shane Gillis was announced as a new cast member on September 12, 2019. He was one of three new cast members for the 45th season of the late-night comedy show. The others include Melania Trump impersonator Chloe Fineman, and the show’s first Asian cast member, Bowen Yang.

Shortly after the announcement, clips appeared online of Gillis making politically incorrect comments on his comedy podcast, “Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast”. Critics quickly isolated and picked up on a few “inappropriate” lines during a larger discussion of racism and prejudice.

Saturday Night Live predictably reacted swiftly to the loudly unhappy left-wing detractors. Just 4 days after officially announcing his hire, Saturday Night Lived caved to pressure and released a statement saying that Gillis has been fired from the show. The statement reads:

“After talking with Shane Gillis, we have decided that he will not be joining SNL. We want SNL to have a variety of voices and points of view within the show, and we hired Shane on the strength of his talent as comedian and his impressive audition for SNL. We were not aware of his prior remarks that have surfaced over the past few days. The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable. We are sorry that we did not see these clips earlier, and that our vetting process was not up to our standard.”

Gillis released his own statements on Twitter both on September 12, after the videos came to light and on September 16, after his firing. In the earlier tweet, he apologized to “anyone who was actually offended” but also defended comedians’ right to push boundaries. In the later pst, he thanked Saturday Night Live for the opportunity but left them with a parting shot, saying that he, “was always a mad tv guy anyway.”

Since President Trump has taken office, Saturday Night Live has solidified its status as a Left-Wing platform, focusing an incredible amount of time and energy on making fun of the President and fellow Republicans. For his part, President Trump occasionally likes to acknowledge how far the program has fallen and how it has become nothing more than a Democratic political ad.
