Rep. Ilhan Omar was recently exposed for fabricating a story about injustice to a group of students while she sat on the Minneapolis city council. Five years ago, Omar spoke to students at Richfield High School in Minneapolis telling them that she witnessed a “sweet, old African-American lady” who appeared in court after spending the weekend in jail for stealing a $2 loaf of bread to feed her grandchild. The old woman was ordered to pay a fine of $80, which she was not capable of paying. Omar told the group of 400 high school students she screamed out “Bullshit!” in the courtroom. “I couldn’t control my emotions because I couldn’t understand how a roomful of educated adults could do something so unjust,” she explained.

The Washington Post covered Omar’s story and they knew that sounded oddly familiar:

Omar’s story echoed the plot of “Les Miserables.” If true, it is also probably embellished. City officials said that police aren’t allowed to arrest people for shoplifting unless there’s a likelihood of violence or further crime. Typically, shoplifters are sentenced to attend a three-hour class.

When Omar was asked about the story, she admited that she might have left out some details.

The Washington Post wrote about Omar’s storytelling:

In an interview, Omar said about the woman that “She might have had a prior [arrest],” Omar said. “I’m not sure. . . . The details might not have all matched, but that’s what I remember.”

The Washington Post pointed out that shoplifters who are non-violent with clean records are not sentenced jail time, but instead they are required to take a three-hour course.

The newspaper also noted another time Omar misrepresented while she spoke to a group of veterans. She stated that 45 percent of military families “rely on food stamps.” The Washington Post pointed out “the actual number is less than 5 percent,” and that the Minnesota representative was attempting to get her point across to the crowd that “Republicans didn’t care for the troops.”

Rep. Omar needs to get her facts and figures straight because we’re not letting her get away with it.
