Teen Vogue, the sister publication to Vogue magazine, tweeted on July 4, 2019, that “Racism and Patriotism go hand in hand,” along with an article written by Jameelah Nasheed, titled, “The Racist History of America’s Patriotic Anthems.” Nasheed’s piece was part of Teen Vogue’s OG History, “a Teen Vogue series where we unearth history not told through a white, cisheteropatriarchal lens.”

Nasheed wrote, “Patriotism is defined as ‘love for or devotion to one’s country.’ As black people, we’re expected to shut up and sing these songs that, for so long, declared and celebrated freedom that specifically excluded us; freedom that, in 2019, stilldoesn’t feel applicable to us.”

Teen Vogue also posted another article to Twitter on Independence Day.

The magazine written for teens has suffered from criticism over the last few years for promoting anal sex, prostitution, and Antifa.

In 2017, Teen Vogue featured, “Anal sex 101 for teens, beginners, and all inquisitve folk.”
