Teen Vogue: “Racism and Patriotism Go Hand in Hand”
Teen Vogue, the sister publication to Vogue magazine, tweeted on July 4, 2019, that “Racism and Patriotism go hand in hand,” along with an article written by Jameelah Nasheed, titled, “The Racist History of America’s Patriotic Anthems.” Nasheed’s piece was part of Teen Vogue’s OG History, “a Teen Vogue series where we unearth history not told through a white, cisheteropatriarchal lens.”

Nasheed wrote, “Patriotism is defined as ‘love for or devotion to one’s country.’ As black people, we’re expected to shut up and sing these songs that, for so long, declared and celebrated freedom that specifically excluded us; freedom that, in 2019, stilldoesn’t feel applicable to us.”
Teen Vogue also posted another article to Twitter on Independence Day.
"This independence day, I’ll be watching the sky, enjoying the lights, the warmth of being surrounded by family and friends, yet all the while keeping close the knowledge of all the crimes this nation has committed." https://t.co/6pE7Jhskdx

The magazine written for teens has suffered from criticism over the last few years for promoting anal sex, prostitution, and Antifa.
"Antifa grows out of a larger revolutionary politics that aspires toward creating a better world..." https://t.co/LwTTsdHjpT
