The president is now in a statistical tie with former vice president Joe Biden in the latest presidential poll which has Biden at 49% while Trump has 47%. That’s according to the latest ABC News/Washington Post. The result shows a major improvement for the president when compared to the February poll, which has Biden at 52% and Trump at 45%. This also comes at a time when the administration’s response to the coronavirus pandemic is polling positively and is gaining support.

While Biden has a slight edge over the president, only 24% of his supporters have strong enthusiasm for him. That’s the lowest for any Democratic presidential candidate since the ABC News/Washington Post poll was first conducted 20 years ago. On the other hand, the poll showed that 53% of Trump’s followers are very enthusiastic about his candidacy.

The strong performance of the economy is another challenge that Biden will have to deal with, although that might change with the effect of the pandemic on the US and the global economy. Another problem that the Biden campaign is facing is that 15% of those who are backing Bernie Sanders now say that if the Vermont senator does not win, they will support Donald Trump instead.

As the other candidates for the Democratic nomination have dropped from the race, Biden is the biggest gainer. Now, 51% of Democrats say they would vote for Biden while Sanders is at 42%. While he has gained the lead for the nomination, Biden is slowly losing his edge against President Trump, who is also enjoying a net positive presidential approval for the first time. Trump now has a 48% approval and 46% disapproval. Most Americans are also in favor of the actions that he is taking to fight the spread of the coronavirus.

Biden is going to have a hard time going toe to toe with President Trump during the campaign. The former vice president’s campaign is plagued with problems. Many see him as a problematic candidate with a history of inappropriate actions towards children. A former employee has resurfaced to accuse him of sexual assault. Biden has also made a lot of missteps and gaffes during his campaign that has led others to question his cognitive capacity for running for office. He had made some bizarre statements while on the campaign trail that has left people wondering if he can actually hold office should he win the presidency.
