The Trump administration is sending elite tactical agents from the U.S. Border Patrol to sanctuary cities as part of an arrest operation because of local law enforcement’s lack of cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Heavily armed agents from a special tactical team typically confront smugglers on the southern border, but will be alongside ICE agents on the front line battling from the inside in Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, New Orleans, Detroit, Newark, New Jersey, and New York.

Customs and Border Protection spokesperson Lawerence Payne said the agency is positioning 100 specially trained officers called BORTAC to assist ICE in enhancing “the integrity of the immigration system, protect public safety, and strengthen our national security.” The operation will take effect from February through May.

Mathew Albence, ICE’s acting director, stated the deployment of the agents is because of the sanctuary cities’ policies, which have made it difficult for immigration agents to do their jobs. “As we have noted for years, in jurisdictions where we are not allowed to assume custody of aliens from jails, our officers are forced to make at-large arrests of criminal aliens who have been released into communities,” Albence said. “When sanctuary cities release these criminals back to the street, it increases the occurrence of preventable crimes, and more importantly, preventable victims.”

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot condemned the news of the agents deployed to sanctuary cities, calling it “fearmongering and xenophobia,” by the Trump administration. She advised residents not to open their doors to anyone who does not have a warrant. Lightfoot reminded residents that the Chicago police and city officials are prohibited from assisting federal agents in civil immigration enforcement efforts.

“If anyone thinks that they can come here to our city and terrorize our residents into the shadows, let me say this, they’ve got another thing coming. Chicago will always stand strong and we will use all of our tools to keep everyone safe,” said Lightfoot.

So basically, Mayor Lightfoot is saying if you’re an illegal alien who has committed crimes then go to Chicago where they will do anything to hide you.
